Happy New Year!

Erwan´s latest really inspired me to burn that little extra christmas energy! ;-) VFF lasted for about five minutes before changing into heavy gear. Can´t wait for spring to come! (More things than crumbling snow lumps to practice throwing with then!) Indoors may be better but nothing beats the fun of practicing MovNat outdoors. Even in 2 ft of snow and a freezing -16 degrees C.

Thank you all for a fantastic year!

hey, i am interested in starting this kind of workout, but i am afraid i have zero cold weather gear.. i know you already answered the question before but if you could point me to a website or some brands of clothing that could help me out achieve moderate warmth during such activities that would be great. i do require every single thing, like i don’t own thermal clothing at all, no base layers.. no good socks. :P

i’m a guy and live in Canada so the weathers are about the same as sweden.

      Hi Sasha,
Finding winter gear that suits your needs and preferences takes time and of course money ;-) For example it depends on how you react to cold weather and how you are built as well as what your taste is like. There are so many good products out there and the most expensive isn´t always the best choice.

      First a few general tips
      - The key to stay warm is to use many thin layers and use the air beneath them as insulation.
      - Wool is very good because it keeps you warm even if it´s wet. For example, I use wool socks because they are the ones that get wet first.
      - For winter use I like cross country ski jackets and pants because they are made to let you move your whole body simultaneously and still provide breathability and keep you warm.

My favorite brand for winter gear is Craft http://www.craft.se/ Check out their 3 layer system. There are so many options but I like the layer 1 Zero with wind stopper in front. And for layer 3 their Cross Country (Called ”Nordic” at the American website.) is my favorite.
You can find a dealer locator for Canada and the US here: http://www.craft-usa.com/dealer_usacanada.php

Of course there are several good brands and you can apply the same principles there.

Good luck with building your own winter wardrobe :-)

Hi Liz! Such an inspiring video! I’ve watched it everyday for a few days and everytime it gives me the same impulse to get away from the computer NOW and run wild! :) I love the music too – can you tell me who it is? Many thanks and keep going!

    • Liz says:

      Hi Sarah,
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about my video. It´s so inspiring for me to know that so many feel the same as I do about getting out and finding joy in natural movement. :-) Posting the video is my way of spreading my positive experiences since the MovNat workshop I went to this summer. I can highly recommend to try such a MovNat event. It helps you to find ways to improve yourself technically and opens up new ways to think about exercise and a healthy lifestyle. For me it was a life changing experience.

By the way, the music is “Exchange” by Massive Attack. Listening to it gives me the same feeling as when I´m running in that winter landscape.

      Have fun out there! ;-)
      Liz

    Take care!

I’m with you on the clothes. I have a Craft base layer 3/4 zip turtleneck that I love. Before primal diet and MovNat, I had gained quite a bit of weight and then taken some of it off by running and biking, and the Craft shirt if from running store. Last year when I had been doing primal for a while and some trail running and Movnat workouts, I suddenly started to wear the Craft shirt with jeans because all of the sudden I looked GOOD in tight clothes. It’s black and makes me feel like an ultra-fit Ninja in Swedish workout gear.

Are those boots or running shoes you are wearing?

    • Liz says:

      Well done Swedish-looking ninja! :-)
Great choice, it´s my favorite brand.

I´m wearing orienteering shoes. An old pair of VJ Twister´s. They are lightweight metal stud shoes.
Not very primal but since I broke my ankle while slipping on an icy spot a couple of years ago, I´m very careful not to make the same mistake again.
Good shoes and the best choice for this weather and surface, but I long for the spring and the liberation for my toes ;-)

  6. Edward says:

Liz, what brand of clothes are you wearing that kept you dry running in that snow?

    • admin says:

      Hi!
The colder it is, the dryer the snow gets. In this case staying dry was not a problem, staying warm was worse… ;-)
Normally i use ordinary cross country pants and jackets in the winter. That day I had Craft pants and a Bergans soft shell jacket and of course long leg underpants and one or two long sleeve underwear tops. When it gets warmer around 0 C, water resistant outer layers becomes more important.

      See you out there!
      Liz

Great video! I love to run in the snow when it is deep like that, but you are right the VFF’s don’t really work so good. We had a warm week here in Ohio so the snow all melted and then when it became cold again some places have patches of ice. On the trails near our house I will be the only one on the dirt and not pavement, and in Winter there will be only a few brave people walking their dogs. The quiet with the snow hanging on all the trees. I just spotted some trees in a park near work that look like I could do my Movnat thing.

Thanks for the Winter inspiration. I’ve only been to Sweden in summer, so I can’t imagine what the winter is like.

Inspirerande!
